Indian traders across the American frontier first opened a conversation with Indian tribes before Europeans settled on their lands. In several instances, various Indian tribes “sold” their hunting lands to the white men who were exploring the new territory for potential settlements or profit.
If you search for ancestors who lived in Augusta, Georgia (Richmond County), you should also search the records in Edgefield County, South Carolina. These two colonial districts traded with the Indians and also shared kinfolks. Augusta was just across the bridge and played a central role in the Revolutionary War, as militia companies in both Colonies participated in surprise attacks, especially after the British seized the port in Charleston.
County records such as Wills, Estates, deeds, and tax digests reveal relationships. To see the names of early settlers in Edgefield, click below:

Whole congregations were known to have emigrated to South Carolina. By 1765, there were an estimated 8,000 Germans in the Colony. (1) The best method of learning more about the congregations is to read religious histories for South Carolina. Such books are generally found on the shelves of Regional Libraries and State Archives. They typically reveal the country of departure, date, and members' names or registers. The most important part of this research is to write down all possible variables of the German names.
Among the families that I traced in Edgefield County were Youngblood families. Youngblood is a German name that requires a study of many documents to find the original name of “Jungblut.” Once I discovered the Rheinland and the Jungbluts family dating back to 1660, Youngbloods were also connected in Maryland, South Carolina, and Georgia.
